Greenhook Ginsmiths Beach Plum Liquer
Greenhook Ginsmiths Beach Plum Gin pays homage to the boozy history and terroir that is our great state of New York. Sloe berries are not native to America, much less New York, so Greenhook Ginsmiths have sourced the finicky, native fruit that we know as the Beach Plum. Beach Plums have a long, documented history in New York and the influence on local culture can be observed in place names like Plumb Beach in Brooklyn and the now infamous, "Plum Island" in Long Island.
Most sloe gins are produced by pressing or juicing the large, bitter berries. This process is fast, cheap, and produces highly variable results. Greenhook Beach Plum Gin is produced by steeping whole Beach Plums in Greenhook American Dry Gin. This process takes 6-9 months, as opposed to the single-day process employed by many sloe gins. This gentle, lengthy maceration imparts a rich, nutty flavor, similar to that of marzipan, while still letting the botanicals of the base gin shine through. A small amount of turbinado sugar is added to slightly sweeten and enhance the lovely plum flavors and brilliant acidity.
