The story of Ferdinand winery begins in 1992 when a teen-aged student at the high school for agriculture- Matjaž Četrtič, took over an old family vineyard. By 1993 and with the help of his family, Matjaz had prepared the vineyard for the exclusive cultivation of high-quality grapes. His vision was to build a wine cellar that would offer high-quality wines, and that vision was immediately embraced by his father Marjan who offered him moral and financial support and later on even gave up his own business to continue as a wine trader- a role that would best be able to support the efforts of the family winery. The first bottles of Ferdinand wine were ready by 1997.
A few years later, Matjaz’ brother Iztok joined the company and gave Matjaž an opportunity to focus on marketing and sales. Today, Ferdinand is one of the more renowned brands in the field of quality Slovenian wines and undoubtedly among the leading wineries in the world of Rebula.
The Četrtič family comes from the highlands. Wine trade has been in the family from the time of Matjaž's great-grandfather Ferdinand, who at a young age lost his life in the war. The vineyards were taken by his brother, who over time abandoned being a winegrower. Since he had no successors, Matjaž was the one who in 1992 took over his biggest vineyard and rendered his homage to his great-grandfather Ferdinand by using and registering his name for his wine brand.
Goriška Brda (the Gorica highlands) is a fertile area between the Soča River and Friulian lowlands. In the north they proceed to the Alps, whereas in the east, west and south they descend into the well-known Italian wine area of Collio. The Ferdinand cellar is located in the Kojsko village. The area is very suitable for cultivating high-quality white wines. The vineyards are situated on the northern edge of the Gorica hills at 150 to 300 meters above sea level. The vineyards are situated some forty kilometers from the Alps, and an additional thirty kilometers from the coast of the Adriatic Sea. These two climate moderators provide for very favorable wine growing conditions. Summer days are long and warm while the nights are cool, allowing for temperature differences that have an excellent effect on grape ripening.
Rebula is the indigenous variety of the Brda region, and it has been produced in the region for centuries. Rebula is best grown on sunny terraces located at an elevation of 150 meters above sea level with poor marl soil and consistent winds. Ferdinand is a wine house that is decisively dedicated to the cultivation and vinification of Rebula.
The Ferdinand winery believes that the creation of every wine begins in the vineyard. They use no herbicides, artificial fertilizers, boticides, insecticides or acaricides, and exclusively use sulfur and copper based compounds and stable manure. The vineyards are grass-covered enabling easy growth and no need for mineral fertilizers.
